The Copy-Editing/Fact-Checking Senior Manager supervises all English-language web copy-editing and fact-checking functions and staff across brands within the Mexico network hub and in line with Content Integrity Group standards. They support workflow processes, assign work, supervise staff, and communicate daily with the Hub Director. They set daily team priorities under the guidance of the Mexico Hub Director, and follow workflow processes provided by the Global Copy Director, Global Research Director, and the Global Workflow Team and report on missed deadlines. They coordinate with network partners to meet production schedules. They advise the web team on journalistic tenets, ethics, and trends.
Primary Responsibilities
- Manages and trains English-language copy-editing/fact-checking web staff in market
- Reviews content to determine proper workstream and/or tier
- Sets team priorities and assigns work
- Reports missed deadlines
- Helps maintain production schedules
- Alerts Global Copy and Research Directors if content does not meet standards or if there are complications within workflows
- Makes automatic copy changes in accordance with brand and Condé Nast style guides and offers recommendations to the Global Copy Director when necessary
Oversees and performs all copy-editing functions, including:
- Maintaining style, consistency, brand voice
- Flagging inflammatory and insensitive language
- Ensuring that content is error-free
- Reviewing translated content to provide market/cultural framework and guidance
- Communicating with writers, content creators, and editors to resolve queries
- Making automatic copy changes in accordance with brand and Condé Nast style guides
Oversees and performs all fact-checking functions, including:
- Reviewing content to verify veracity prior to publishing
- Working in consultation with Legal Affairs
- Communicating with writers, content creators, and editors to resolve queries and issues
Desired Skills & Qualifications
- Native-level English (spoken and written) required, with a deep understanding of idiomatic expression and an eagle eye for detail
- Management experience
- Excellent journalistic judgement
- Ability to meet deadlines and manage time effectively and creatively
- Extensive experience copy-editing and fact-checking
- Near-native-level English speaker (CEFR C2) with an understanding of idiomatic expression and an eagle eye for detail
- Near-native-level Spanish speaker (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages C2)
- Experience working on a CMS
- Strong knowledge of language trends and familiarity with style guide usage
- Technical agility required
- Easygoing, effective, and patient mentor and collaborator
- Able to multitask, prioritize, and switch gears
- Comfortable managing up and down the chain of command
- Experience in news gathering and data reporting a plus
