The research/fact-checking editor will research and fact-check content at Allure (web magazine); requirements include an understanding of journalism protocols and news-gathering procedures, negotiation and problem solving skills, and detail-oriented, near-native-level English skills. The ideal candidate will have an interest in health, wellness, and beauty trends.
Primary Responsibilities
- Performs English-language fact-checking for Allure web magazine
- Helps maintain production schedules in collaboration with Allure editorial team, reporting missed deadlines and prioritizing the fact-checking of high-risk materials
- Alerts Allure team if content does not meet standards or if there are workflow complications
- Reports to both Global Research Director and Copy-editing/Fact-checking Hub Director to develop best practices around workflow
Performs all research/fact-checking functions, including:
- Reviewing content to verify veracity prior to publishing
- Working in consultation with Legal Affairs, ensuring that content is error-free and legally compliant
- Flagging inflammatory and insensitive language
- Reaching out to sources and consulting back-up on stories to execute thorough fact-checking
- Communicating with writers, content creators, and editors to resolve queries
Desired Skills & Qualifications
- Near-native-level English (spoken and written) required, with a deep understanding of idiomatic expression and an eagle eye for linguistic subtleties that may alter veracity of facts and claims
- Background in the human sciences with a keen understanding of health, biology, and the beauty industry a huge plus
- Experience in fact-checking and research
- Ability to meet deadlines and manage time effectively
- Conversational-level Spanish
- Experience working on web content
- Strong knowledge of language trends and familiarity with style guide usage
- Technical agility required
